Do Manners Matter Online?

I like to go over to Enkay’s blog several times a week to check out what he has to say. A post earlier this week on comment etiquette really got me thinking.

Do manners matter when you’re online? Should you still be polite and act with some modicum of decency in this vast black hole known as the Internet?

You hear about it all the time…people pretending to be someone they are not, people posting horrible things about others on the internet…heck, my brother-in-law is a detective and he’s investigated crimes that involved a-holes who posted stuff about others online…some of the stories are completely crazy, but absolutely true.

I think that manners matter. Is it easier to be rude when you aren’t in front of someone, having to face them? Yep! But that doesn’t mean you should be.

I guess I’m “old school.” I treat others how I’d like to be treated.

No, I’m not a sweetheart 100% of the time. I get fussy. And I cuss WAY too much. But for the most part, and I think I have a few people who will vouch for me, I’m a pretty nice person.

And I try to use the manners that my momma taught me…of course, back when she taught me there wasn’t an internet. But I think if there was, she would have taught me manners for online behavior. I guess that’s what parents have to add to their parental duties nowadays…online manners training. What do you think?
